Privacy by Design: Cryptography and cryptocurrencies
Synopsis
Privacy by Design is a framework that embeds privacy protection into the design and operation of systems, related processes and technologies from the outset, rather than treating it as an afterthought and creating technical debt. Privacy by design emphasises proactive measures, such as minimising data collection, ensuring transparency, and empowering users with control over their personal information.
Cryptocurrencies, built on blockchain, embrace this framework, wielding encryption and hashing to forge secure, decentralised financial solutions. By embedding privacy from the outset, they redefine trust and empower users.
In this presentation we will explore the Privacy By Design concept focusing on cryptographic technologies, such as hash functions, public key cryptography, ring signatures, stealth addresses and zk-Snarks and how they can prove a transaction has taken place without revealing private information.
This cryptographic soup empowers both the good and the bad - supporting financial sovereignty while creating regulatory headaches, but with quantum computing on the horizon cryptocurrencies face an existential threat, potentially unlocking their proofs and exposing them to attack by breaking these encryption methods and enabling attackers to forge signatures, steal funds and manipulate transactions.
