From classroom to cyber defence: The student incubator experience
Synopsis
Bridging the pathway from higher education to a career in cyber security is Monash University’s Student Incubator Program.
In 2024, the University launched the Student Incubator Program to provide final-year university students with real-world experience through a structured, fully paid, year long part-time work placement.
The first year attracted 180 applicants and five students were offered roles. They have exceeded all expectations, not only mastering the tools and knowledge to be productive cyber analysts, but also taking on projects of their own that sometimes combined their academic work with challenges the broader team was experiencing. All five students have secured long term employment post program.
In this panel discussion, we bring together some of our program participants to share their experiences - what worked well, what didn’t, and how the program could be modified for smaller sized organisations.
We will also explore how such initiatives can enhance collaboration between academia and industry to better prepare the next generation of cyber security professionals.
Together, we can share insights, highlight common challenges, celebrate successes, and explore pathways forward to better prepare the next generation of cyber security professionals.
