Don’t panic! The hitchhiker’s guide to security translation: Navigating technical metrics to boardroom impact
Synopsis
The purpose of the talk is to empower security professionals with effective techniques for translating technical security metrics into compelling board-level risk narratives. It presents a structured approach for security teams to move beyond technical jargon and create impactful stories that drive executive understanding and action.
Security professionals frequently struggle to communicate effectively with boards and executive leadership teams. All too often, security reporting defaults to technical metrics that fail to resonate with decision-makers – vulnerability counts, Microsoft Secure Score, or threat detection statistics that lack business context. While these metrics can provide value to operational teams, they rarely enable strategic decision-making at the board level, leading to misalignment between security efforts and business priorities.
During the presentation, I will introduce the “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Security Translation” – a framework that helps security professionals craft compelling risk narratives from technical data. Using this approach as our “towel” (the essential item every hitchhiker needs), I’ll demonstrate how to transform complex security metrics into business-focused stories that connect with board members.
The presentation will include specific examples of metrics translation from multiple domains – including vulnerability management, access control, incident response, and cloud security – showing the ‘before and after’ transformation of security reporting. I’ll also address common pitfalls in board communication, such as overwhelming technical details, failing to connect security issues with business objectives, and missing opportunities to frame security as a business enabler rather than a cost centre.
Through practical examples and before / after transformations, attendees will learn techniques for visualising security data, contextualising technical risks within business priorities, and tailoring security reporting to different executive personas. This approach ensures security teams can effectively communicate their value, challenges, and needs to those who control resources and strategic direction – ultimately leader to better-informed security decisions at the executive level and stronger alignment between security and business objectives.
