Cyber’s middle managers: The unsung architects of transformation
Synopsis
Cyber transformations are often framed as top-down initiatives, with success attributed to executive sponsorship or strategic alignment. But in reality, the heavy lifting of change happens in the middle, where middle managers (both cyber and non-cyber) translate strategy into execution, juggle priorities, mediate stakeholder tensions, and carry the weight of delivery without always having the resources, authority, or recognition.
This talk aims to shine a light on the often-overlooked role of cyber’s “middle layer” - those leading uplift efforts across teams, projects, and silos - and explores how they can be better supported, empowered, and protected from burnout. Drawing from first-hand experience across major uplift programs in under-resourced, high-stakes environments, this session explores the psychological, structural, and leadership challenges middle managers face, and offers practical guidance for organisations seeking real, sustained transformation.
This talk is for current and aspiring middle leaders expected to drive change without the title, and for senior executives seeking to stop their strategies from stalling after the boardroom sign-off.
